Digging To America
I actually managed to read a whole book while on vacation. I didn't bring one with me and had no desire to read any of the 40 or so books in our condo, until I saw Anne Tyler's Digging To America. I love Anne Tyler.
I really liked this book as well. Tyler is a master of writing about relationships and what drives people. This book explored two young couples in America who both adopted children from Korea. They meet at the airport and their "homecoming" experiences are quite different. They are quite different. They manage to become friends and stay friends for life. The book is about this journey and some of the hurdles their relationship faces. One couple are typical Americans with a big extended American family. The other couple are Iranian. They too have an extended family but somehow they don't seem as large, or maybe it is that they are more reserved. They celebrate each other's cultures but are also annoyed or afraid of them as well. It takes years for them to really grasp a true understanding of each other. But this makes for a good friendship and an interesting read. Tyler really shows you what is 'inside' and I like this very much. The end was simple and wonderful. She leaves you feeling satisfied. I liked this book very much. Also by Anne Tyler are two of my very favorite books ever: The Accidental Tourist and Dinner At The Homesick Restaurant. Give 'em a try.

cultures and the U.S. I'll have to tell her about this one.
Hi - found you through catty - oh, love Anne Tyler so much, rare that a
writer gets better and better...I read one about a woman who ran away from
her family and became a secretary and wore this wonderful gray dress and
reinvented herself and I can't, for the life of me, remember the title.
But her books soothe the soul.
Guess what? You've been memed. Sucks, I know. But I had to do it, maybe you
