Daughter is turning 9. I can hardly believe it. It goes WAY too fast. She's at a wonderful age, although I say that every year. She's maturing. She agreed to forgo the $400 twenty kid party where no one talks to each other, they all get over stimulated and then go home. We are back to house parties!!!!! HURRAY. She had 4 cousins and 3 BFF's from school. It was great! Of course, I may have enjoyed it more than anyone because it was an event for me to plan/decorate/cook. I love that shit! We decided to make it Breakfast at The American Girl Cafe. If you've never been to the American Girl Cafe (it's FABULOUS), this will give you an idea. The Cafe is all done in black, white and hot pink.
The wheels were turning and boy did I have fun! I got hot pink lights for the dining room chandelier. I found black and white floral plates, hot pink napkins and fake crystal cups. I put out my sterling candlesticks with candles that are black with rhinestones on them. We put zebra stripe bows on the chandelier and on the hot pink gift bags too.
The girls all wore pajamas and brought their dolls, which they barely played with because they were so busy screaming and laughing. Dinner was Daughters choice: pancakes, bacon, sausages, strawberries, blueberries, cantelope and whipped cream (served on a silver tray and crystal bowls). We made rainbow sherbet punch. There were two rounds of whipped cream shots in their mouths. I made ice cream "cupcakes", which is ice cream frozen into cupcake paper. They decorated these with gummy worms, sprinkles, etc. A positive for me was that while they were all oooing and aaaahing over the cake, they had no room for it at the end of the night. SO!! I get to save it for the family dinner tomorrow night!!! This is my favorite thing I've ever made and I swear it was soooo easy. I used Edible Images Designs and adhered them on to the gum paste bow (which I made myself!). Then you just trim and wrap the image around the cake. They come in all colors and fun designs. Go to Lucks or Country Kitchen SweetArt.

After dinner we played "What's in the Bowl". Oh my goodness, this was soooooo much fun. The girlies loved it so much they all went 3 times each and the game lasted for almost an hour. We blindfolded them one at a time and put the grossest things we could find in a bowl and they had to guess what it was. Cold and wet pasta, an egg, wilted lettuce, a pickle in juice, cereal with milk....it was hysterical. Husband and I had as much fun as the kids with this. We were all screaming, "TASTE IT! TASTE IT! TASTE IT!".
It was a great night for the Fagans. But now, we really tired! Be good out there and have a great weekend.
Your comment about gargantuan parties is spot on. My kids go to others'
such extravaganzas for themselves, they prefer to have a few friends over
for pizza and soccer in the back yard. Last April, my older son had six
buddies over for a sleep over and several of their mothers later told my
wife how much fun their boys had. In fact, their boys now wanted to do the
same thing instead of having a major production. Sometimes, the simple with
a personal touch is better than spending big bucks on something someone
else creates.
You MADE THAT CAKE? Wow. I would have oohed and ahed over that too.
Randall - It was dynamite. Every girl called today to say what a great
time they had. Daughter is actually asleep on the couch right now -
exhausted from too much fun.
It sounds like a delightful time for everyone which is exactly as it should
be. The Chuck E. Cheese type party is okay and all but parties like this
one will leave lasting impressions of the best kind on everyone. Better
isn't always bigger and flashier, what an outstanding lesson to pass along
and in such an excellent way!
My daughter took one look and said she wants a cake like that next year!
And the menu looks fantastic. It sounds like you and the girls had
a great time :-)
What an awesome cake! Happy Birthday to your girl. It sounds like fun,
all of it.
Your family is blessed to have such a talented and loving mother! Sounds
like you have wonderful appreciative kids too. That cake looks too
scruntious to eat!
Quick drive-by "Happy Thanksgiving!"
Nutsy, you're really creative. Sounded like a nice time. Happy Birthday
to your daughter! I was wondering had you ever thought of going into
business doing these things for kids, but for pay? You certainly have the
passion and mind for it, but would you want to spend the time that way?
HAVE THE BEST THANKSGIVING EVER! I'm interested in what your menu will be!
